Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church
A Community of Faith, Seeking New Life in Jesus the Christ

It is our goal to do two things as the Mission and Outreach Ministry Team.

First, to promote mission work. Mission work is any activity that provides support for those in need including but not limited to meals, labor or financial assistance. We accomplish this in several ways and are committed to growing our missional efforts. See our list of Mission activities below.

Second, to provide Outreach events that will introduce ourselves to the community and help us to identify community needs. These events may be fun-related or educational activities for our members and the community. In addition, they may lead to more Mission work. See our list of Outreach Events below.

Although other groups may take the lead in the Outreach Events, it is the Mission and Outreach team's goal to ensure that our efforts are focused on the things that support the larger goal of our church - to bring others into a relationship with Jesus. The best way to get people to believe in Jesus and the resurrection is to live the life that Jesus asks of us.

Luke 10:26-28 (New International Version)

26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"

27He answered: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself. '

28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."

Mission Opportunities

Homeless Men’s Shelter Meal – The Second Friday of every other month starting in February. Volunteers cook and serve a meal to approximately 175 men at the Shelter six times a year.

Loaves and Fishes Food Collection - On the 2nd Sunday of the month, you are asked to bring a non-perishable item for us to provide to the Loaves and Fishes organization.

Gleaning - Picking 'left over' fruits and vegetables that will be donated to food pantries. We work with the Society of St. Andrews in this work.

5 Cents A Meal - Financial contributions that go to the Charlotte Presbytery for distribution to the local food pantries. This comes to approximately $4.50 per person per month. Please consider saving your nickles for this worthwhile cause!

Oakdale School Volunteers - Volunteers work at the school to help with reading and math. In addition, one of our Sunday School classes works with the school to help a family provide a special Christmas for their children. Contact Janet Jordan if you are interested in volunteering at Oakdale!

The following Mission work is sponsored by the Presbyterian Women.

Harris Hospice Unit Meals - A meal is prepared and delivered to the Unit for the families six times a year. In addition, they  provide goody bags to the cancer outpatients once a year.

Presbyterian Hospital Intensive Care - Snacks and magazines are provided for the families with loved one in the unit.

Crossnore School and Alexander Children's Home - Financial support is provided to assist these organizations in their work with children.

Outreach Events

Take Your Sweetheart Out to Dinner and Leave the Kids With Us! Scheduled around Valentine's Day, this event is to provide a free babysitting service so that parents can have a few hours to themselves! We provide dinner, Bible story time, activities and a movie to wrap up the evening. Check the site next January for the 2010 date!

Easter Egg Hunt – Check out our website in March for the 2010 date! This event is sponsored by the Love Circle and provides egg hunts, snacks and a good time for all! Oh, and don't forget to have your picture made with the Easter Bunny.

Vacation Bible School - Sponsored by Christian Education, this is our crowning summer event. Each year, the committee comes up with an action packed plan for the children in community and the church as well as Bible Study for the adults. Don't miss out - watch our website for the 2010 dates and go view this past summer's pictures on the 2009 Power Lab VBS page.

Trunk-n-Treat - We provide a safe Trick-or-Treat option for our community by hosting a daytime event on or near Halloween. Children are invited to dress up and come 'Trunk-n-Treat' in our parking lot. The 2009 event will be on Saturday, October 31st from 3:00 - 4:30 PM.

Live Nativity - December - The Christian Education Ministry team coordinates a wonderful event during the Christmas season. This event offers the ability to drive through 4 or 5 scenes depicting the birth of Jesus Christ and to be reminded of the Reason for the Season.

If you are not actively participating in a ministry team and/or feel called to to join the Mission and Outreach team, our monthly meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:15 - 7:00 PM at the church. All are welcome!

A Prayer for the People of Haiti

God of compassion

Please watch over the people of Haiti,

And weave out of these terrible happenings

Wonders of goodness and grace.

Surround those who have been affected by tragedy

With a sense of Your present love,

And hold them in faith.

Though they are lost in grief,

May they find You and be comforted;

Guide us as a church

To find ways of providing assistance

That heals wounds and provide hope

Help us to remember that when one of your children suffer

We all suffer

Through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives

And rules this world with You. Amen
